Calls have been made for Wales to catch up with the rest of the UK in making life saving skills part of the curriculum.

Suzy Davies, the Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, said: “Making sure that all children are taught age appropriate life saving and CPR skills as part of the school curriculum is crucial if we are to have a nation of life savers here in Wales.

“Without regular training and refreshing of these important skills we can not expect our young people to be confident in taking action when someone needs help.”

Mrs Davies, who has been campaigning for age appropriate life saving training to be on the curriculum in Wales, added “The UK Government has confirmed that life saving training will be a mandatory part of the curriculum in England and the Scottish Government has now followed that lead as well.

“This means that Wales is now lagging behind the rest of the UK.”

Mrs Davies, who is also the Shadow Minister for Education, went on to say “The Lib Dem Education Minister backed my proposals to make age appropriate life saving part of the school curriculum when she was in opposition.

“Now she is part of Welsh Government she needs to get on with it.

“At the moment the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting in the UK are much lower than in Norway and the Netherlands, two countries where CPR and life saving training is part of the school curriculum.”

Mae galwadau wedi'u gwneud i Gymru ddal i fyny â gweddill y DU o ran gwneud sgiliau achub bywyd yn rhan o'r cwricwlwm.

Dywedodd Suzy Davies, AC Ceidwadwyr Cymreig dros Orllewin De Cymru: “Mae gwneud yn siŵr bod pob plentyn yn cael ei achub yn ôl oedran a sgiliau CPR fel rhan o gwricwlwm yr ysgol yn hanfodol os ydym i gael cenedl o gynilwyr bywyd yma yng Nghymru.

“Heb hyfforddiant rheolaidd ac adnewyddu'r sgiliau pwysig hyn, ni allwn ddisgwyl i'n pobl ifanc fod yn hyderus wrth weithredu pan fydd rhywun angen help.”

Ychwanegodd Mrs Davies, sydd wedi bod yn ymgyrchu dros hyfforddiant achub bywyd priodol i fod ar y cwricwlwm yng Nghymru, “Mae Llywodraeth y DU wedi cadarnhau y bydd hyfforddiant achub bywyd yn rhan orfodol o'r cwricwlwm yn Lloegr ac mae Llywodraeth yr Alban wedi dilyn hynny plwm hefyd.

“Mae hyn yn golygu bod Cymru bellach tu ôl hi o gymharu â gweddill y DU.”

Aeth Mrs Davies, sydd hefyd yn Weinidog Addysg yr Wrthblaid, ymlaen i ddweud “Fe wnaeth Gweinidog Addysg y Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol gefnogi fy nghynigion i wneud rhan sy'n achub bywydau yn briodol i oedran y cwricwlwm pan yr oedd hi ar y meinciau cefn.

“Nawr mae'n rhan o Lywodraeth Cymru mae angen iddi fwrw ymlaen â hi.

“Ar hyn o bryd mae'r siawns o oroesi ataliad ar y galon y tu allan i ysbyty yn y DU yn llawer is nag yn Norwy a'r Iseldiroedd, dwy wlad lle mae hyfforddiant CPR ac achub bywyd yn rhan o gwricwlwm yr ysgol.”
