Suzy Davies AM – Shadow Minister for the Welsh Language – has reacted with astonishment at a leaked report that shows Transport for Wales (TfW) broke the law nine times over its failure to provide services in Welsh on trains.

Mrs Davies said:

“What a shocking example this Welsh Labour Government is setting, and what a shocking message it sends to our Welsh speakers and learners.”

According to a story published today (January 6) on news website nation.cymru, Welsh-language breaches by TfW – which is owned by the Welsh Government – included:

Train and platform announcements made in English only

Correspondence only in English

No option to buy tickets from the TfW website in Welsh

An English-only app.

Nation.cymru stated that the report by the Welsh Language Commissioner followed complaints and by the Welsh language society, Cymdeithas yr Iaith.

Mrs Davies said:

“I am appalled at this disgraceful set of breaches of the law by the Welsh Government. It seems that not only is this Labour administration incapable of running a rail service in Wales, but it is also incapable of providing services in both official languages of this nation.

“It is an embarrassment that a state-owned business in Wales broke the law over so many fundamental matters. Laws on the Welsh language are there for a reason, and the Welsh Labour Government has set a dreadful example to all businesses in Wales, and let down this nation’s Welsh speakers.”

Mae Suzy Davies AC - Gweinidog yr Wrthblaid dros yr Iaith Gymraeg - wedi ymateb gyda syndod mewn adroddiad a ddatgelwyd sy’n dangos bod Trafnidiaeth i Gymru (TfW) wedi torri’r gyfraith naw gwaith dros ei fethiant i ddarparu gwasanaethau yn Gymraeg ar drenau.

Dywedodd Mrs Davies:

“Dyna enghraifft syfrdanol y mae Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru yn ei gosod, a dyna neges ysgytiol y mae’n ei hanfon at ein siaradwyr a dysgwyr Cymraeg.”

Yn ôl stori a gyhoeddwyd heddiw (Ionawr 6) ar wefan newyddion nation.cymru, roedd toriadau Cymraeg gan TfW - sy’n eiddo i Lywodraeth Cymru - yn cynnwys:

Cyhoeddiadau trên a phlatfform wedi'u gwneud yn Saesneg yn unig
Gohebiaeth yn Saesneg yn unig
Dim opsiwn i brynu tocynnau o wefan TfW yn Gymraeg
Ap Saesneg yn unig.

Nododd Nation.cymru fod yr adroddiad gan y Comisiynydd Cymraeg yn dilyn cwynion a chan y gymdeithas Gymraeg, Cymdeithas yr Iaith.

Dywedodd Mrs Davies:

“Mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi fy mrawychu gan y set warthus hon o dorri'r gyfraith. Mae'n ymddangos nid yn unig bod y weinyddiaeth Lafur hon yn analluog i redeg gwasanaeth rheilffordd yng Nghymru, ond ei bod hefyd yn analluog i ddarparu gwasanaethau yn nwy iaith swyddogol y genedl hon.

“Mae’n embaras bod busnes dan berchnogaeth y wladwriaeth yng Nghymru wedi torri’r gyfraith dros gynifer o faterion sylfaenol. Mae deddfau ar y Gymraeg yno am reswm, ac mae Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru wedi gosod esiampl ofnadwy i bob busnes yng Nghymru, ac wedi siomi siaradwyr Cymraeg y genedl hon. ”

Shadow Education Minister says students and teachers must have certainty and clarity over assessments

The Shadow Education Minister – Suzy Davies MS – has said that each day that passes shortens the odds for externally set and marked assessments for students in Wales, and will do little to allay students’ fears over inaccurate or unfair assessments.
